Introduction

I have written extensively about the Walgreens Pharmacy chain for NewsBreak. My August 23rd article, “Update: Plans For Walgreens Closings in 2022,” is particularly pertinent to this present piece due to separating fact from fiction as it regarded the company’s future.

In response to an explanation of the company’s ongoing financial issues, the article elaborated upon reasons behind the permanent shuttering of some Walmart entities while others had remained open. For several, only the pharmacies had closed and on a temporary basis, which caused consternation for those who had been unable to fill their prescriptions.

WesternMassNews.com received a statement from Walgreens regarding the above, which said:“As a result, there are some instances in which we’ve had to adjust or reduce pharmacy operating hours, as we work to balance staffing and resources to meet the needs of our customers and patients.”

Now comes word of an unexpected three-week closing of a stalwart Minnesota location.

Let us explore further.

Walgreens, 2022

According to a December 15th article from the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, entitled “Rodent Problem Forces Downtown St. Paul Walgreens to Close For Three Weeks Beginning Saturday,” the titular issue is expected to be cleared within a month.

As excerpted from the article: Faced with a rodent problem, the two-level Walgreens located within Treasure Island Center on downtown St. Paul’s Wabasha Street will close for pest control for three weeks beginning Saturday, Dec. 17, with a reopening scheduled for Jan. 9. Walgreens had posted a brief explanation in printed signage on its interior door indicating “this Walgreens location will be closing to improve your shopping experience,” without further elaboration. The notice described a Dec. 19 closing date, but a company spokesperson on Wednesday said Friday will be the last day of operation in 2022.

The article went on to state: “I’ve lived downtown for nearly four decades,” said Rich Neumeister, a self-described citizen’s lobbyist who has been contacting city and state officials for a more thorough explanation. “I know how that Walgreens has been a central point for the population of St. Paul, particularly for elderly and disabled people. It’s bizarre they’re going to close for three weeks without any downtown alternative.”

Conclusion

As alluded to above, the Walgreens chain has long been financially challenged. However, there are presently no plans to permanently close the company.

In the event of further updates to this story, I will share them here on NewsBreak.
