I have written extensively about the Golden Corral buffet restaurant chain for NewsBreak. My June 12th article, “Plans For Golden Corral Closings in 2022,” examined widespread rumors regarding the long term financial health of the perennial chain, while August 7th’s “Multiple Golden Corral Restaurants Temporarily Closing For Several Months With No Notice” detailed a recent spate of announced temporary closures.

As excerpted from the latter piece: News of an unexpected temporary closure of an Illinois Golden Corral location has surprised the city and garnered a statement by Alton Mayor David Goins, who said the immediate Golden Corral closing was “disappointing” and he hopes it is a temporary move: “Golden Corral has been a staple in our community for quite some time,” he said. “I am looking forward to when they reopen again and we will be communicating with the owners to see what is ahead.” According to the July, 2022 article in which contained the above quote, “Alton’s Golden Corral Unexpectedly Closes Doors For at Least Four Months,” the city is listed as one of many in the proceeding weeks that will also temporarily be shutting doors.’s “This Alton Buffet Closed With No Notice, But Don’t Worry. They’ll Be Back Soon” addressed the Alton closure and reasons thereof: While there’s currently no clear reason given for the sudden closure, Lance Trenary, Golden Corral president and CEO, said in a June podcast with Sam Oches of Nation’s Restaurant News that multiple locations are currently undergoing a remodeling and re-imaging process and will reopen between now and the end of the year.

This week, word was reported of a new temporary closure, and another closed location being built over by another company.

Let us explore further.

Golden Corral, 2022 published “Chillicothe – Golden Corral Buffet Closes Temporarily” on September 5. The article stated the following about the titular Ohio location: Chillicothe – The local buffet in Chillicothe is closed and will be closed for several weekends. Golden Corral is located at 1660 North Bridge street the store says that it’s remodeling and will be closed after today for several weeks. The store’s plan is to reopen on September 20th for a reopening with a new entire look.

On a permanent basis, The Citrus County Chronicle, in its piece titled “Goodbye Golden Corral, Hello Grill House,” recently discussed the building over of a former Golden Coral stalwart in Florida: A new family sit-down restaurant is coming to Inverness and it will be located inside an old favorite. The Grill House will tentatively open this fall and will feature steaks, fish, fried chicken, wings, pizza and burgers, along with mac & cheese and other sides. There will be a salad bar as well. No alcohol. The Grill House will be housed inside the old Golden Corral at 2605 State Road 44. Owners David and April Jedziniak said Grill House is a division of the well-known buffet chain. The dad-and-daughter duo has been with Golden Corral since the late 1970s and wanted to start a new concept.

Though I have discussed in my recent articles closures of individual locations related to franchisee bankruptcies and location underperformance, Golden Corral tends not to announce its shutterings — either temporary or permanent — far in advance.

The company, though, remains the most financially successful buffet chain in the country. Current or recent closings, with few exceptions, are primarily temporary and for remodeling purposes.
