Northern California can expect several huge snowstorms this week, as announced by the National Weather Service (NWS).

The toughest days to travel will be Wednesday to Sunday, according to the NWS. Hazardous mountain travel is expected on Wednesday and will get worse on Thursday all the way through the Christmas weekend.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 4 PM on Sunday for several areas, including Shasta County, Colusa County, Shasta Dam, and Burney.

"Heavier snow is forecast to start Wednesday evening and continue into the weekend with an additional 1-2 feet of snow possible each day over the western slopes and lowering snow levels," says the NWS.

Total snow accumulations are expected to be 9 to 13 inches, with the total amount of wet snow estimated to be around 1 to 3 inches. Some localized amounts of snow will reach 3 to 4 feet.

For today, there will be a mixture of rain and mountain snow, which the NWS says will have little impact on travel. On Wednesday, however, the weather will have a moderate impact on travel. And on Thursday to Sunday, the weather will have a high impact on travel.

" A Winter Storm Warning for snow means there will be snow covered roads and limited visibilities. Travel is not recommended while the warning is in effect," the NWS released in a statement.

"Major travel delays and difficult travel conditions are anticipated later this week. Gusty winds will further reduce visibilities during this event with local whiteout conditions possible. Holiday travelers should prepare for winter driving conditions by packing chains, warm winter clothes, and extra food and water," the NWS also released in the statement.
