The Brown Deer Public Library has opened a "seed library," and it's open to the public.
"The Brown Deer Public Library's Seed Library officially opens on Monday!" the Brown Deer Public Library wrote in a Facebook post on March 22, 2023.
"Welcome to the world of saving and sharing seed!" the public library explained in the post.
"Our mission is to help nurture a thriving community of gardeners and seed savers and to introduce the joy of gardening to all members of our community. The Seed Library is a free program committed to increasing our ability to feed ourselves wholesome food. We will be offering both seeds and education."
The library explained in its post, "Through the time-honored tradition of seed saving, we celebrate biodiversity, nurture locally adapted, organically grown plant varieties, and foster community resilience, self-reliance, and a culture of sharing." The library is part of the Milwaukee County Federated Library System. In the comment thread of the Brown Deer Library's post, one person wrote that she wished other Milwaukee County communities would open seed libraries too.
According to the Brown Deer Public Library, "The seed library operates on the honor system. You become a member automatically when you withdraw seeds to plant."
