Police in Danville, Virginia, say that a 13-year-old juvenile has been accused of suffocating a 4-year-old sibling. The teen is now charged with murder in connection with the death, police revealed in a news release.

The Danville Police Department “has charged a 13-year-old juvenile with the murder of that juvenile’s 4-year-old sibling following an incident that occurred in August 2022 in the City of Danville,” the release said.

“A first degree murder charge was brought following further investigation stemming from the juvenile’s confession earlier this week about suffocating the victim. The juvenile was arrested in another jurisdiction,” the release noted.

In August 2022, “investigators and crime scene responded to the scene of a residence where a 4-year-old child was found in a room without a pulse and not breathing,” says the release. “The child was transported to SOVAH Health in Danville before being airlifted to another medical facility, and later died.”

The juvenile “will be transferred to W.W. Moore Detention Center pending trial,” police said.

WSLS reached out to Danville police for additional details, but they said they could not release them. "Due to the nature of the incident involving juveniles, the press release that was sent is all the information we are going to be able to release," police told WSLS.

In their news release, Danville police did not release the names of the victim or of the suspect. They also did not reveal a motive or the gender of the suspect or victim in the news release, which they issued on March 17, 2023.
