A missing boater’s body has been found in the Mississippi River, the Burlington, Iowa, Police Department says.
The boater's identity has not been released. The official cause of death was not released, either.
According to a press release from the Burlington, Iowa, Police Department, on March 17, 2023, at approximately 2:11 a.m., Burlington Police Officers “responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at the north boat ramps.”
Upon arrival, officers “located an unattended truck and boat trailer. A subsequent search of the area revealed an unoccupied boat north of the BNSF bridge, on the Illinois side,” the release says.
“Authorities began searching the area between the north boat ramp and the BNSF bridge. At approximately 2:30 p.m., a deceased male was recovered from the Mississippi River,” the release says.
“The facts and circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. The name of the individual is not being released at this time,” police wrote, not providing the cause of death.
“The Burlington Police Department wishes to thank all the agencies that responded to assist. No additional details will be released at this time," Burlington police wrote.
On March 17, 2023, police had warned, "There will be an increased presence of law enforcement, emergency personnel and a low flying helicopter along the Mississippi River. Authorities are conducting a search for a missing boater."
Many people offered prayers for the missing boater on the Burlington Police Department's Facebook page. Police have not revealed how or why they believe the boater ended up in the water.
