BRAZORIA, HOUSTON, TX — Brazoria County Emergency Rental Assistance Program will start receiving applications today, June 14, at 10 a.m.

The program is a federal grant that aims to aid households facing difficulties in paying rent and utilities through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The assistance offered includes late rent and utilities and also rent payment in advance. Some of the utilities covered are electricity, natural gas, water & sewer, and trash removal. Disconnect or reconnect fees may also be included.

The program will cover internet costs for high-priority households. However, telecommunications services such as cable, telephone, and cell phone carriers are not covered. Utilities that the landlord covers within the rent will also be treated as rent and covered.

Generally, the payment must only be made to landlords or property managers and companies. However, applicants can also receive compensation in certain situations.

The amount of assistance that the county will distribute is over $11 million from the ERAP funds. Each applicant can only receive up to $25,000 for each household. Once received, the eligible applicants do not have to repay the county.

Note that there are certain requirements to fill as the applicants fill the form that is available on the Brazoria County Website.

Applicants will have ten working days to complete the required documents. Those eligible for the fund will receive a notification at their email address. It is also advised that the applicants inform their landlords before applying to help with the process.
