Books are an excellent way to preserve the culture and art of a community and the writers in that community. I can't imagine a world without books and being able to transfer the knowledge in a meaningful way. And for Black people and Black authors, books have become an outlet for self expression and culture preservation.
If you live in Austin, you can delve deeper into Black culture and history by reading books and where better to buy them from than a Black-owned bookstore? The Black Pearl Books located in 4803 Burnet Road, Austin is a great place to visit to not only support a Black owned book store, but educate yourself on some of the nuances of the culture.

Meet the founder
Black Pearl Books was founded by Katrina Brooks and what started as an online store, evolved into a physical location with a mission. Thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement, she received an influx of orders but it's also important that we don't just support Black businesses when it is trending. It should be a part of our lifestyle and you can start by educating yourself by reading books from Black authors and also buying those books from Black owned businesses.
Going beyond books to a cultural movement
One really amazing thing about Black Pearl Books is that apart from the wide selection of books they have on offer, they also do so much more for the culture. From their merch line to curated pop-ups or hosting book signings, they are a complete package when it comes to cultural education and awareness. They teach, educate, uplift Black authors and give them a voice.
You can support them by buying a merch through this link.
According to Black Pearl Books,
When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire community benefits.
- Spend $100 at a local-owned business and $52 of that stays in your community.
- Spend $50 at a national chain and keep $6.50 in the local community.
- Spend $50 online with a remote vendor with no sales tax collected and keep not one penny in your local community.
- Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.
- More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.
