MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC- Mecklenburg County activates some cooling stations and additional programs in response to extreme heat during summer. The county launched free fans initiative for senior residents.

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation just announced fan initiatives to combat the extreme heat. Free fans are now available for individuals aged 60 and older. Residents aged 18-59 with disability income due to COVID-19 pandemic can also sign up for the free fan initiative.

Residents who are eligible in this program can sign up to get free fans by presenting a picture of identification showing date of birth and current residential address. One fan will be given to one registered person. Registration can be made by accessing Mecklenburg County Reck & Park website.

Mecklenburg County is now accepting applications for eligible residents. After the registration is verified, residents of Mecklenburg County can pick up the fan at several locations in Charlotte, Mint Hill, and Huntersville.

In addition to the free fan initiative by Mecklenburg County Park & Rec, The Department of Social Services (DSS) is also providing free fans for seniors age 60 and older and residents with disability income. After making registration by calling (980) 314-7018, the free fans will be delivered to the household address.

As summer temperatures continue to rise, the County also activates some cooling stations. Collaborating with Roof Above, the cooling station is available at its Day Service Center on 945 N. College Street for anyone experiencing homelessness and seeking protection from the extreme heat. Colling stations are also activated in several Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library locations and Park and Recreation centers.
