MECKLENBURG, NC - Latta Nature Preserve is located in Huntersville, Mecklenburg, covering an area of 1,460 acres. It is the biggest nature preserve in Mecklenburg County which included the Beatties Ford Basic Forest natural heritage site. It has many different facilities which offers you different kinds of experience.
The Latta Nature Preserve has various nature preserves which include hardwood forests, open fields, streams, as well as Piedmont Prairie restoration site protecting the highly endangered Schweinitz's sunflower and Michaux's sumac. It protects the drinking water source of 700,000 residents of Mecklenburg and Gaston counties.
There is a brand-new educational facility called Quest in the preserve. You can enter the facility for free, with no parking fee as well. The facility stretches for more than 13,000 square feet. There is also a perfect place for those of you who are into birds. The Carolina Raptop Center has a collection of birds including birds of prey like owl and bad eagles. After that, you can check out the Raptor trail and buy some souvenirs at the gift shop.
A wide variety of outdoor activities are also available at the preserve, such as hiking on various different tracks, kayaking, canoein, or paddleboard. You can also borrow poles and buy bait at the Quest to go fishing.
