It’s that time of year again, May the Fourth. If you are not sure what I mean try saying it out loud and then add “be with you.” It is a sort of national informal Star Wars holiday, also known as “Star Wars Day,” but with a large generalized nerd following as well.

I love the memes and celebrations that people share online - a lot of cosplay! Check the hashtags #starwarsday and #maythefourth for some delightful nerd fun!

It’s interesting that the history of this day is kind of rooted in conservative UK politics. “The first official application of the phrase to the May 4th date came in 1979, when the U.K. Conservative Party paid for a newspaper advertisement saying, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!” to celebrate the party's general election victory” says USA Today. But as with anything pop culture, nerd culture, or Star Wars - things take off and come into a life all their own with the drive and support of an enthusiastic fan base.

Star Wars is a major force in our cultural landscape, indeed. “Star Wars: A New Hope hit theaters on May 25, 1977. The movie was a smashing success making over $775 million globally. Keep in mind, this is 1977 and getting close to that $1 billion mark during that time was huge. It was already a cultural phenomenon, just after one movie. And 44 years later, it's still going strong.

Obviously, the phrase "May the 4th be with you" is based on "May the Force be with you," something said numerous times in the Star Wars films” (Gamespot).

Here in the Reno Sparks area we are lucky to have a few really great comic book stores. In celebration of May the Fourth Be With You and Star Wars Day, here’s a few great local spots to check out to gather with fellow fans, nerds, cosplayers, and Star Wars enthusiasts.

Omega Frog Comics

I love this spot. My daughter and I went there for Free Comic Book Day last year and it was wonderful. You can get comics, talk to knowledgeable and cool people, and then go sit outside and read, grab some food, and chill at Legends. Check out their website here or visit and like their Facebook page.

Comic Kingdom

Comic Kingdom is located on Moana and has a really strong following of locals who give the place raving reviews. Check out their Facebook page and maybe even join their Facebook group to meet others into comic books and comic culture.

Grassroots Books

A bargain bookstore that is a local treasure with used books galore and a great collection of comic books too. For more information check them out here.

I wish you all a wonderful Star Wars Day and of course, May the Fourth be With You as you enjoy our local comic book store treasures and communities.
