My daughter and I had a wonderful time at Andelin Family Farm for Baby Animal Days. This festival ends May 1st and if there are still tickets, I recommend it. It was our first time down on the Andelin Family Farm. It felt like a nice and peaceful little oasis in the midst of what is becoming a lot of urban sprawl.

The event is geared towards the little ones - and oh what fun they can have! But, my 12 year old loved it too. We got to pet lambs and kids (baby goat kids). We attempted to hold and pet baby chicks. And we had a good time just looking at the variety of animals that exist on this family farm - camels and alpacas, pigs and peacocks, and even sweet and playful baby cows.

If you miss the Baby Animal Days and want to experience a bit of farm fun, and the peace that comes with it, Andelin Family Farm will be giving farm tours starting May 4th. Check it out on their website. You can also support the farm via their farm shop.

Other family farm activities might be taking place this summer, keep checking their events page. And in the Fall I know my daughter and I will be back for their Harvest Festival, which sounds simply amazing and fun.

Family farms in the Reno/Sparks area are really a treasure. Being from the Midwest, these farms are not the kind of farms I grew up with. For one, there’s a lot of dirt and not a lot of shady trees! But that’s the High Desert, right? I was used to grass and old barns, and more humidity! Reno/Sparks area farms are spacious and beautiful and they have a lot to offer our area.

We love to visit local farms in the Fall for pumpkin patch season but now we know that many of our local farms have events happening year-round that allow us all to connect a bit to the land around us, learn about animals and farmlife, and take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

I hope that we can all work to keep these spaces afloat and thriving both as necessary environmental support for the land, and as quiet and slow happy places in the midst of a growing urban landscape.
