How much longer can you shop at a Disney Store in Illinois, and will there be sales?

Admittedly, it had been a long time since I have been to a mall. I am not the only one. Even before the pandemic, malls have been suffering.

Disney has been closing stores around the country, including in Chicagoland, over the past few years. The Disney Store I used to take my daughter to in the mall in Aurora, Illinois, closed about two years ago.

And now, the remaining four Disney stores in Illinois will be gone by September.

Stores have been leaving malls

Most malls have a lot of empty spaces these days, and the pandemic has not helped. It's not surprising retail stores like Disney are abandoning malls and stand-alone shops for more lucrative sales online.

Disney has also partnered with Target and plans to add more in-store Disney shops to Target Stores.

When will the Chicago Disney Stores close?

This September, 57 Disney Stores are closing in North America, leaving only 25 stores left. There are currently four remaining Disney Stores in Illinois, and they're all closing in September.

  • Chicago Premium Outlets, Aurora, IL - closing 9/15
  • Gurnee Mills, Gurnee, IL - closing 9/15
  • North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL - closing 9/1
  • Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, IL - closing 9/15

Will there be sales?

There might be some discounts, but they probably won't be steep. Disney has not announced sale prices for Chicago stores at this time, and because they are shifting to online stores, they may not want to get rid of their inventory for cheap.

The KrazyCouponLady, who knows about these things, said during the last round of Disney Store closings in March that we shouldn't expect liquidation sales. "Since they’re moving to a digital-first approach to the Disney Store, it’s likely that any unsold merch will be rerouted to the remaining stores or the website."

Where can you still shop for Disney apparel and toys?

Once the Chicago stores are gone, Disney lovers in Illinois can still shop online. Also, Disney has announced they will be adding 100 in-store locations to Targets across the country by the end of the year. A list of exactly where these will be is not available yet.

Currently, in Illinois, you can find mini-Disney Stores inside the following Target locations:

  • Chicago Brickyard, 6525 W Diversey Ave, Chicago, IL
  • New Lenox, 2370 E Lincoln Hwy, New Lenox, IL
  • Mundelein, 3100 W IL Route 60, Mundelein, IL
