Lockport Street in Plainfield is closed to traffic for construction, but the shops are all open.
When I make a new food discovery, I tend to get excited. And I'm feeling thrilled about Krema Coffee House in Plainfield.
I went on a weekday morning on a day that Lockport Street was closed to construction. The stretch of road is shut to traffic from Route 126 to Route 59 until May 21st. If you're heading to a downtown Plainfield business during this time, keep in mind, you will need to park on the side streets or the public parking lots at Illinois Street and Des Plaines Street.
When I arrived downtown, parking was no issue along the side streets. The weather was pleasant, and I enjoyed the short walk from my car to the shop.
When I walked through the door, I was greeted immediately by the friendly staff. With its dark interior, quirky lighting, and comfortable seating, the ambiance is just what you would want from a coffee shop.
A few diners were sitting at well-spaced-out tables. The staff was all wearing masks, as was everyone in line.
There were options for flavored lattes, cappuccinos, and iced coffees, all of which sounded good. But, the coffee house offers "high-quality, small batch coffee from select locations around the world," and I wanted to be able to taste the coffee without flavors or foamed milk getting in the way.
I chose a 16-ounce pour-over coffee. For those that don't know, pour-over coffee is made differently from traditional drip coffee. Pour-over coffee is supposed to produce a more flavorful cup.
When making pour-over coffee, the barista has all the control over the coffee extraction. Meaning it can turn delicious, or go horribly wrong. This is why I like to buy pour-over coffee from experienced baristas rather than attempt to make it myself at home.
When I ordered the drink, I was given my choice of coffee bean. The barista recommended the Costa Rica coffee. She said many customers enjoyed it due to its smooth flavor and low acidity.
She was right. It was unbelievably smooth without a hint of bitterness. I drank it black. I almost always put cream or milk in my coffee, but this cup didn't need it. I enjoyed every sip.
I had a more difficult time deciding on the food. The baked goods are all made in the shop and looked very tempting. I was happy to learn that none of their pastries are made with nuts or peanuts. I have a daughter with a severe allergy, and I can't wait to bring her back here to pick out a safe treat. Even their pesto offered on one of their sandwiches is made with seeds and not pine nuts.
However, be sure to let them know if you have allergies so they can be careful to avoid cross-contamination. Although there are no nut ingredients or peanuts in their baked goods, they do have a hazelnut spread sandwich on the menu and walnuts in a salad. Also, the only allergies I asked about were tree nuts and peanuts. I don't know if they accommodate any other types of food allergies.
I decided on a breakfast sandwich and ordered the brown sugar bacon, gouda, and egg on ciabatta bread. Though there was seating available indoors and out, I took my food home to eat on my patio in my backyard.
I was not disappointed in the egg sandwich. The bacon was crispy with a hint of sweetness from the brown sugar, and the egg was cooked to perfection.
The roll was soft on the inside with a satisfying crunch on the outside, and it held up well to the messy sandwich. There was a sauce on the sandwich, perhaps an aioli sauce. It wasn't listed on the menu, but it blended well with the flavors from the sandwich and the melted gouda cheese. It was a nice touch and made a common breakfast sandwich into something special.
Truly, Krema Coffee House is a gem in Chicago's southwest suburbs. If you are anywhere near the area, I highly recommend a visit. If you prefer tea, they have a wide selection of hot and iced teas.
I will be back here soon. The next time with my daughter in tow so that we can sample the freshly made pastries. I also want to try one of their flavored lattes. And the S'mores Toast. And did I mention they have freshly made kolaczkis?
