Make new memories and spend some quality time with your mom this Mother's Day by taking her on a walk or run on her special day. It's a fun way to be healthy, honor your mom, and enjoy the Chicago spring weather.

And it should be a nice day for running. Currently, the Weather Channel is calling for a high of 68 degrees and mostly cloudy skies in Chicago for Sunday, May 9th. Of course, check the weather before you go as we know it can change suddenly in northern Illinois.

If you can't be together in person this year, you can still run a race in celebration of all the moms out there. Or choose a virtual race that you can both participate in, even if not together.

Here is your guide to the Chicagoland running/walking events (including virtual options) going on this Mother's Day.

Chicago Mother's Day 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk

  • In-person and virtual
  • Location: Cannon Drive at Fullerton Parkway, Chicago
  • Date and Time: Sunday, May 9th, 2021

Whether she's a walker or a runner, take her to this event along Chicago's lakefront near Diversey Harbor.

There will be Covid-19 safety procedures for the race. No spectators are allowed in the designated space event. Masks are required at the start and finish, but you can remove your mask while running or walking. And the starting line will be set up with different heats to avoid a crowd of people. Runners and walkers are encouraged to stay socially distanced during the event.

If you feel uncomfortable with in-person racing, they also are offering a virtual option. Register for the in-person or virtual event here.

Barrington and Deer Park Mother's Day 5k

  • In-person and virtual
  • Location 1: 200 Spring Street, Barrington
  • Location 2: 21600 W Field Parkway, Deer Park
  • Date: Sunday, May 9, 2021

Due to Covid restrictions, this Mother's Day 5k is holding two races simultaneously to help with social distancing. The races will start at the same time, one in Barrington and one in Deer Park. Or there is a third option to run virtually.

To keep the run socially distanced, runners will sign up for different time slots for the race. Everyone gets a t-shirt, finisher's medal, and a cake pop.

And it's for a good cause. Proceeds go to the Wings Program, a charity that seeks to help victims of domestic violence. Register for the in-person event or the virtual race here.

Ashley Elizabeth Montgomery Memorial 5K Run/2 Mile Walk/Kids Run

  • In-person only
  • Location: Perry Farm, 459 S. Kennedy Drive, Bourbonnais
  • Date: Sunday, May 9th

Head about an hour south of the city to Bourbonnais where you can participate in a 5k run, 2-mile walk or kids run. The event, hosted by the AshleyCan Pediatric Cancer Foundation, will be held in the picturesque location of Perry Farm Park.

Perry Farm, located near the Kankakee River offers smooth and paved nature trails, a barnyard playground, and a historic farmstead.

Same-day registration and packet pickup will take place on the day of the event. For more information, check the event website.
