Would you like to maximize your potential and minimize your stress?

To live your days with greater passion, purpose and progress?

To “level up” in 2021?

To have fewer bad days categorically?

You might be surprised to discover that this is indeed within your reach.

Though life unexpectedly hands us curve balls, (from time to time) no matter how well-intentioned we are, that certainly doesn’t mean that we should not have goals, a game plan or a strategic approach in carving out our days.

In fact, doing so can make all the difference in how we bounce back from set-backs or how we navigate the path to success.

With this in mind, here are 10 ways to slay your days and show your shine!

1. RISE EARLY

Rising early gives you the opportunity to gather your thoughts; experience a state of calm before any family chaos or personal needs arise; structure your day and accomplish more. Additionally, it enables you to be more pro-active than reactive. And who doesn’t love being able to get in front of things before they become problematic?

2. HAVE A GAME PLAN OR TO DO LIST

There’s great validity to the expression, “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.” Keep in mind that your to-do list does not have to be extensive or even “firm.” The key here is to have certain desired tasks written down to serve as visual reminders, provide direction and offer better time management amid distractions and potential detours throughout the day.

3. EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST

Did you know that breakfast is considered by many nutritionists as the most important meal of the day? According to Webmd.com, “ Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism, helping you burn calories throughout the day. It also gives you the energy you need to get things done and helps you focus at work or at school. Those are just a few reasons why it’s the most important meal of the day. Many studies have linked eating breakfast to good health, including better memory and concentration, lower levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol, and lower chances of getting diabetes, heart disease, and being overweight.”

4. PRAY/MEDITATE

Prayer and meditation often go hand in hand. The general objective is to prepare your mind with positive thoughts, get into a good headspace and tap into a higher source. As a spiritual person, I pray daily. But, I just started meditation this year to determine whether it would provide real benefits.

There are numerous Apps available for guidance to navigate you through the process. I currently use MYLIFE for meditation sessions. They boast over 400 activities.

5. START WITH A POSITIVE MIND

Contemplate your blessings. Begin with a “can-do” attitude. Frame your thoughts properly.

6. FIND TIME FOR FUN AND RECREATION

Carve out a few hours (or whatever is reasonable for your schedule, lifestyle and preferences) to pursue a hobby; or have a glass of wine; or read a good book; or garden. Doing so will add to your joy potential!

7. LISTEN TO MUSIC

Musician and author Oli Braithwaite shares the following: “Music is a wonderful thing, fulfilling and worthwhile in and of itself. And while we should never lose sight of this fact, science has also discovered many additional benefits associated with music education and listening to music in general which are worth exploring.”

They are identified by Stars and Catz as follows:

List of benefit types

  • Memory
  • Language
  • Learning & intelligence
  • Motor function
  • Exercise
  • Breathing
  • Brain function
  • Immune system
  • Mood
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Productivity
  • Pain relief
  • Heart health
  • Social
  • Eating

8. RATION YOUR NEWS WATCHING

It goes without saying, that watching the local and national news is necessary for us to stay informed on events of the day, political happenings and even weather. But, moderation is key. For example, I have a friend that watches the daily news about 4 or 5 times a day (on different channels). Yet, she can’t see the correlation between her viewing and her dismal moods. Being exposed to so much “negative” input (i.e. murder, fires, kidnappings, death, carjacking, etc.) can be overwhelming and create despair, vulnerability, hopelessness and fear. Choose your viewing wisely.

9. GET THE BAD OR UNDESIRABLE TASKS OUT OF THE WAY QUICKLY

Do you hate doing yard work? Paying bills? Mopping floors? Whatever the task, get it done and gone! The longer it lingers, the more it hangs like a grey cloud over your day. And, believe it or not, it takes time to even procrastinate.

10. MINIMIZE TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media can be both positive and negative; depending upon how we use it. Used positively, it can help to build our writers’ platforms; advance our careers; help us connect with quality people; and more. But, if we are not prudent, we waste valuable time, get caught up in foolish gossip, and have nothing to show for our time and efforts. For optimal results, choose two or three platforms (not all of them) where your target audience is most likely to congregate, and concentrate your efforts here.

AND HERE’S A BONUS TIP TO CONSIDER AS WELL...

Avoid spending time with toxic people. Toxic folks, whether they are friends, family members, or co-workers, can take a heavy toll on our minds, hearts and spirits. And dealing with them can be a real "buzz kill."

Toxic people are often found to be:

  • Dramatic
  • Confrontational
  • High-maintenance
  • Chronic complainers
  • Needlessly negative
  • Gossip oriented
  • Emotionally wounded (“hurt people hurt people“).

Final Thoughts

In keeping with some of the above suggestions, here are a few motivational quotes to enhance your day and enhance your efforts.
