I have to admit that I have always taken it for granted that our country will always be a democracy, but recently I have realized that we need to be vigilant to make sure that democracy doesn’t slip through our fingers.
What does democracy mean? The dictionary defines it as government by the people, a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation involving periodically held free elections. A Democrat is one who practices social equality. Within that definition, is the unwritten statement that we have to trust that the elections were fair even if it is someone we didn’t vote for. We also need to accept the truth about an election, not just the truth we want to believe. We also have to be aware of the way the media often manipulates our emotions. We are intelligent enough to see through that.
One of the things I love about this country is our freedom, and that includes our right to free speech and to have different views. I would love to see us do a better job of being more tolerant of each other’s views. We have some of the best intellects in the world in our country, and discussion can stimulate and grow those intellects leading to ideas to make our country even greater. Hatred and anger dowse the fire of unity and inspiration.
I love the way our country comes together in times of need, and that is one of the things that makes us great. We are resilient, strong, and capable of solving anything, but we will be stronger together not divided.
