Coinbase's Super Bowl commercial broke the internet

Jenn Leach

Today, following the airing of Super Bowl LVI, the internet is in an uproar over Coinbase's simple yet effective Super Bowl commercial.

It featured a bouncing QR code that you could scan with your cell phone to be brought to Coinbase's promotional website to get $15 in Bitcoin for new signups.

The commercial brought in customers in droves that it crashed the website!

Why was Coinbase's commercial so popular?

To run the 60 second Super Bowl commercial, it cost Coinbase nearly 14 million dollars.

Worth it?

I think so.

Less than 24 hours later, the internet is boiling over talking about the simple, powerful commercial that Coinbase came up with.

First, the commercial aired during a super popular time people were watching television, during the Super Bowl. It was about a hot and trending topic, cryptocurrency investment. It was simple yet engaging and incredible effective.

All you saw was the bouncing QR code and you're left staring at the screen wondering what happened next. Once you realized that the QR code was all that was happening, you dart across the room for your cell phone to scan the code for fear of missing out on whatever Coinbase was sharing.

It's called FOMO or fear of missing out.

The offer was attractive and it was for a limited time.

These are some of the things that made Coinbase's ad during the Super Bowl LVI airing work!

Did you get a chance to catch Coinbase's commercial during the Super Bowl?

Did it catch your attention or do you think it's overrated?
