Blue Nile is an Ethiopian restaurant in Houston, Texas. If you’ve never eaten Ethiopian, it’s definitely a cuisine you should try at least once in your life. I happen to be Eritrean which is a country very close to Ethiopia so I’ve had both Eritrean and Ethiopian food all my life.
This place in Houston, Blue Nile is what I have wanted to review for a long time so keep reading if you want to learn about the food, experience, service and overall impression.
Ethiopian food is very delicious. I’ve eaten a bunch of different Ethiopian restaurants in my life and they’re not all good.
You’re going to have your injera. This is like a pillowy soft crêpe or flatbread. It’s soft and huge. It’ll cover your entire plate and this is the foundation for your meal. Atop this you’ll enjoy a mix of saucy proteins and roasted veggies.
Many are prepared with this spice called berbere. It’s red with some heat to it. It’s absolutely delicious.
When I eat Ethiopian I usually get a vegetarian platter. And this is regardless if I’m eating meat or not. That’s because I’m so funny with meat textures. If it’s too fatty, or rubbery or not perfectly tender the entire meal will be a turn off to me. So to avoid this I stick to a veggie platter.
Some dishes don’t call for perfectly tender meat and I totally understand that but call me spoiled, my parents would always tenderize their protein really well and so we always would enjoy delicious tender, easy to chew and easy to digest meat cuts so if I think I could possibly get something else in or if I haven’t tried it before at that restaurant then I tend to stay away from meat unless it’s chicken or fish.
The veggie platter at Blue Nile is divine.
You get like seven or eight different kinds of vegetarian dishes all in one. It’s a medley of two different kinds of lentils, greens, a potato carrot dish, and some other delicious foods which are included. They give you loads and loads of injera.
The injera is slightly sour because it’s fermented. Kind of like how kimchi has a sour taste or kombucha. It’s from the fermentation. But, injera doesn’t taste like either of those but it’s not bland, it is full of flavor.
I also order an appetizer which are called samosas. They are the veggie samosas that are stuffed with a spicy lentil mixture. They look like little won tons and they taste absolutely delicious. We usually finish off the samosas before we get home.
Although I’ve never eaten inside, I have gone in once or twice and it’s well-decorated and has a real comfortable feel. I hate when you go in restaurants and you feel like everyone’s looking at you or it just feels like you stand out at the entryway.
You don’t get that feeling at all here. It’s really comforting and everyone is friendly. I’ve had a great experience every single time here.
Ethiopian food is a real experience. You have definitely got to try it in your lifetime. This is my number one favorite kind of cuisine.
Other than the food, you want to try the honey wine and if you have time, the coffee ceremony or just having a cup of their coffee which is called boon, will be a real experience for you. The coffee is strong and if you add sugar to it it’s just perfect. I used to sip this stuff as a teenager and it is my favorite kind of coffee too.
Hands-down, Blue Nile is an 11 out of 10. It’s one of my favorite Ethiopian restaurants. They do Ethiopian food really well. They also cater to a lot of different cuisine so if you’re vegetarian or pescatarian or if you really enjoy me they have different dishes to cater to your way of eating.
