I have been living in the great state of Texas for nearly 2 decades now. I’ve lived other places in the world including other parts of the United States and abroad.

There are just some things that make Texas special and several things that you can find here that are not available in other states. In this article I’m gonna go over 4 things Texas has that other states don’t and by the end of it, you’ll totally be jealous.

But don’t worry you can always visit Texas to enjoy these Texas staples. Let’s go.

H-E-B

H-E-B is a grocery store located throughout Texas.

They’re based in San Antonio, Texas and you can find them literally all across the state. This is the best grocery store that you will ever come across.

I’ve visited dozens of grocery stores in various states growing up across the nation from Albertson’s to Aldi‘s, Winn-Dixie, Randalls, Kroger and many more.

H-E-B really stands apart in a crowd.

First, you can’t find great, fresh and delicious tasting produce anywhere else other than H-E-B like their huge assortments of fresh fruits and vegetables. They have a delicious meat and seafood counter filled with tons of food that you just can’t find at other grocery stores.

Plus they have some really cool add-ons in the store that make it stand out from other grocery stores.

First, they have a tortilla factory, called a tortilleria. This is where you can get fresh store-made tortillas by the bag and if you’re lucky you can take them warm. You can get corn tortillas, flour tortillas, a blend of corn and flour tortillas, wheat tortillas and a lot more. They even do flavored tortillas like southwest flavor and others.

Other store features:

  • Sushi counter
  • Fully stocked bakery with fresh bread and donuts
  • Demonstrations where they cook in store and share over microphone, handing out samples
  • And, more!

They also have these superstores called H-E-B Plus stores that includes restaurants in the store, an electronics section, apparel, toys, and more.

Kolaches

Kolaches are absolutely one of my favorite breakfast foods. Picture a giant pig in the blanket.

It’s usually a sausage or ham and cheese that’s stuffed into a soft roll like the giant sweet rolls from Golden Corral. It’s kind of like that.

They’re super delicious and I enjoy eating them with mustard. Other people eat them with ketchup or hot sauce. Or you can just eat them alone.

They may have these in other places but I know when my sister moved to the East Coast last year she couldn’t find them anywhere. In Texas they’re plentiful and I’d be really sad if I moved out of the state and they didn’t have these there.

Have you had kolaches?

Whataburger

Whataburger is a burger fast food chain located in Texas. You can find them all across the state and they feature freshly made burgers and sandwiches with a ton of other menu items.

They make these burgers fresh after you order. They’re giant, delicious and you can really get hooked on them.

I love that you can customize them anyway that you want, with grilled mushrooms or jalapeños or any other fixings or ingredients that they have available. It makes it really special and it’s not something that you can do at other burger fast food chains.

Texans rave and rave about Whataburger. If you ever visit the area you’ll definitely want to try this out.

SXSW

Ok, so SXSW (South by Southwest) is probably something that you’ve heard of.

It’s a music festival that they have in Austin, Texas every year.

While I’ve never had a chance to visit, despite living as close as a 40 minute drive from Austin, it’s something I hope to visit one day. Not only do they have your favorite music artists performing but they also have food and films and it’s just a fun time.

It lasts several days so you’ll have many opportunities to get it on your schedule. People fly in from out of state to check out SXSW so it’s definitely a fun festival people love.
