Florida Woman Charged With Hate Crime After Allegedly Pepper Spraying 4 Asian Women

Within the past couple of years, New York City has been seeing a very concerning uptick in attacks on its Asian residents. These attacks can range from general harassment to brutal attacks that leave the victims hospitalized. Another attack has now occurred in NYC that saw four women having their time out ruined.

A woman allegedly attacked four Asian women in Manhattan. Madeline Barker - a 47-year-old woman -used pepper spray on the women as she shouted racist remarks. She has now been indicted on hate crime charges, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Barker - who is originally from Meritt Island, Flordia, attacked the group of women on Hudson St. between 13th and 14th St in the Meatpacking District. This occurred on June 11, 2022. She has been charged with 8 counts of assault in the third degree and four counts of aggravated harassment in the second degree - both as hate crimes.

Before spraying the women, Barker allegedly asked, “Why don’t you just go back to your country.” After that, the women began feeling a burning sensation on their faces.

“People of all backgrounds deserve to feel safe,” Bragg said in a statement.

Bragg announced the indictment of another man on Wednesday for yelling anti-Asian slurs at two Korean women. Derrick Johnson, 40, was charged with two counts of assault in the third degree as a hate crime and two counts of aggravated harassment in the second degree.

It is unclear what is being done to address this very concerning trend.
