This is a nonfiction recollection of events as experienced by me; used with permission.

I have been dealing with mental health issues for a long time. Before I knew what was going on, I had to deal with going to the psych ward every once in a while. Generally, it would be due to me having some kind of an episode where I became a danger to myself.

When I was 13, I had an episode where I ended up cutting my arms up pretty bad. Because I had never done anything like that before, my mom made me go to the hospital. After they talked to me, they wanted me to stay for around 3 days to be watched. They wanted to make sure I was safe and they wanted to learn a little more about what medications helped me.

The stay at the psych ward was fine it was mostly like taking a break from society. They had rules and were structured in a way to keep me from getting too bored. I don't really remember this stay that much but I do recall that after the 3 days, I was so happy to be home.

I had to take a few days off of school so I had to go back to classes. One problem I had was that my arms were all bandaged up so I tried to wear clothes that hid everything. In school people were the same they didn't seem to notice that I was gone which was great since I didn't want to talk about it.

After lunch I had a social studies class that I remember was one of my least favorite classes. That class went fine but when everyone was getting ready to leave, the teacher pointed at me and said something about cutting down and not across because then you end up getting locked up instead of having success with suicide. Then he started laughing and my classmates kind of just stood there since nobody was expecting the teacher to do that.

I tried to just gather my things and leave so I could be somewhere else instead of around everyone that just saw me getting made fun of. It was terrible to hear that but I really didn't want anyone else to know because it was terrible enough that everyone in social studies knew about it. However, they came to get me after my next class.

They told me that somebody saw what the teacher did and they wanted me to tell them so they could tell if our stories matched. I said a bit about what he said to me and they said they would take care of the issue. That social studies teacher was gone the next time I went to his class and I didn't see him anywhere after that.

Hopefully that teacher got his act together because making fun of me when you're supposed to be there to help me learn is pretty mean. He didn't know what my life was like outside of that class. It was nice that a classmate told them what happened, but I kind of wish I stood up to him myself when he started teasing me.
