In San Francisco, a gourmet toast and artisan bread obsession has been going on for years. The artisan bread was not a surprise with sourdough bread being such a treasured item but gourmet toast? In the past 10 years or so this trend has slowly and quietly become a favorite to locals.

In San Francisco, some call it the high-end toast thing. Several restaurants are serving gourmet toast to customers who can’t get enough of it. Some locals have tried to keep it somewhat quiet just so it won’t become such a big thing that it’s hard for them to get this treat.
There is the iconic Tartine Bakeries whipped ricotta cheese toast with orange marmalade, pistachios, Meyer lemon, and lavender honey on a piece of thick buttermilk toasted bread.
Or The Mill which is the combined business of Josey Baker Bread and Four Barrel Coffee. Enjoy their best-selling Cinnamon Sugar Toast with a slick slice of country bread, cinnamon, sugar and butter, and a dash of sea salt.
And they don’t have outlets or wifi so you can enjoy yourself in peace. And don’t be surprised to see people walking down the street with an egg in a hole with a perfectly poached egg in the middle of country bread with compound garlic and sage butter.
Another popular place for toast is Jane the Bakery. There are several in San Francisco and their avocado toast is very popular. Topped with avocado mash, a poached egg, thinly sliced pickled shallots and a hint of jalapeno makes this an exciting and fun dish.
Whatever your taste, you should try some of the local specialty toasts that have become such a big part of San Francisco cuisine.
