Many people are walking around dehydrated and don't know it.

Water is easy to neglect but is one of the most important things for your health. It's also important for having the healthiest skin possible.

If you've been noticing that you're more fatigued than usual, it may be because of a lack of water.

If you've noticed your skin is dry and dull, it also might be because of a lack of water. All the expensive creams and lotions in the world won't do much if you're constantly dehydrated.

Before you spend a lot of money on things like that, make sure you've addressed your water intake.

If you've been neglecting water for a while, it's time to make it part of your daily life.

The Importance of Water

This goes beyond just the hydration issue. Water is critical for countless functions in the body. Some of those include:

  • Digestion
  • Absorption
  • Transport of nutrients
  • Circulation
  • Balance of body fluids
  • Regulation of body temperature
  • Eliminating toxins

You need water if you want to feel your best. It's also important for your focus, memory, and concentration.

If you have been having trouble concentrating at work, it may be because you're dehydrated.

If you're trying to get fit--and are exercising more--a lack of water is going to make it more difficult to perform. Without adequate water intake, your workouts will suffer.

You need water before, during, and after your workouts.

How Much Do You Need Each Day?

Six to eight glasses have always been a good rule of thumb to follow. If you want to get more specific, you want to take half of your weight (in pounds) and drink that in ounces each day.

If you weigh 160 pounds that would be 80 ounces daily. There is 8 oz in a cup, so that's around ten cups of water a day.

A large bottle holds at least 3-4 cups, so you can see how it’s pretty doable.

To start your day on the right foot, have a glass or two of water when you wake up. While sleeping, you’ve spent the last 8 hours or so dehydrated.

It's important to kick off that hydration first thing. This early morning water will also help cleanse your body and jumpstart optimal function.

You can take things to the next level by squeezing some fresh lemon juice into the water. This will help to enhance the detoxifying and cleansing benefits of the water.

Lemon can also help improve your digestion and may also help boost metabolism.

How Does Water Affect Your Skin?

It’s important to remember your skin is an organ. It's actually the largest organ in the body.

Your skin is made up of cells, and like all cells; they are made up of water. When you're dehydrated, it's hard on not only your internal organs but the giant external organ that covers your entire body.

Depriving these cells of water can turn your skin dry, tight, wrinkly, and flakey. Dehydrated skin does not have the same resilience and this leads to wrinkles.

Skin also has a natural barrier that retains moisture. Dehydration disrupts these barriers. This is what can lead to dry and sensitive skin.

Most of your skin's moisture comes from the body, so you want to make sure you're not neglecting it if you want your skin to look its best.

Final Thoughts

If you haven't been making water a priority, this is the time to start doing so.

If you haven't been drinking much, it can be hard to jump right to eight glasses a day. Instead of taking on too much at once, start small, and gradually build it up.

Take a week or two, and start with one or two glasses a day. Then, each day, add another half glass in to get your body used to the new amount of water.

Water is something you don't want to deprive yourself of. Your skin, and your health, will thank you for it.
