Get off of my lawn

I’m a night owl.

The great thing about being a night owl is you can get everything done for tomorrow before going to bed. *drinks tea*

The bad thing about being a night owl is it gives you plenty of time to think about your life.

One day I turned 18, and then I blinked, and now I’m in my 40s.

I don’t know what happened — did I miss a meeting?

Maybe I was having a nap.

I know it’s wrong to do so but I’ve officially started to dislike and resent young people.

There you are, being young, with your dreams and your enthusiasm, with your energy and your hope.

Your sense of entitlement baffles me.

I’ve three things to say to any young people who have a problem with this:

  1. Get off of my lawn
  2. You’re right to be annoyed
  3. I’m only joking — I don’t really dislike you at all

The truth is you only bug me because you remind me of who I was at your age and who I intended to be.

You remind me than once I was young and wanted to put my plans for world-domination into action.

I used to be an angry young man — these days, two out of three ain’t bad.

I’m so over-the-hill now I can see the bottom.

But surviving this long I have learnt a few things.

I’d love to tell you what they are but I know you won’t listen to me because I’m a grumpy old man.

So I’ve got one thing to say to young people, one sound bite of truth, one tiny bit of wisdom:

Get everything done in life before the age of 30.

That’s it.

I’m not joking.

Get everything done in life before the age of 30.

They say life begins at 40.

I say death begins at 30 — if you’re lucky enough to live that long — so do the math.

Get everything done in life before the age of 30.

Write out a list of everything that you want to do in life.

Try to get everything on that list before the age of 30 no matter what it takes.

Make that your mission in life:

Get everything done in life before the age of 30.

Do not pass Go.

Do not collect $200.

Use the energy you’ve got to build the world that you want.

Don’t let anyone stand in your way — including a grumpy old man like me.
