The Shirley Canyon Trail in Squaw Valley is such a beautiful hike!

Off Route 28, in between Tahoe City and Truckee, is Squaw Valley. There was once an Olympics hosted there, and it's a great little village with lots of shops and also trails. In the summer it's a great place for hiking. The Shirley Canyon Trail starts right behind the village, and you can hike all the way up to the top of the mountain and take the tram down. Or, you can go as far as you want and turn around.

The trail follows a river all the way up, until you come to Shirley Lake at the top. The river has waterfalls going all the way down, and you can stop and swim in a lot of the pools along the river. It's a really great hike, but does have a lot of incline and some rock climbing, so beginners or elderly might have a harder time.
