A newbie’s tips on how to start golfing in LA⛳

I started playing golf because it’s the best quarantine sport: you mind your own business, stay in your stall and you keep your distance when walk outside on a golf course. I kept playing golf even things are heading back to normal because unlike sports like tennis, swimming, running, you can socialize while playing golf: talking to friends while hitting the balls, or drinking some light beers with family while walking on the course. I’m still such a complete amateur in golf but I want to share my experience on how to start playing golf in LA!

First, golf is not like tennis - you can’t get a cheap racket and hit balls on free courts everyday. Clubs are so expensive and every ball you hit, you pay for it. So for clubs, I started by getting a little sand wedge - given that it’s affordable and easy for beginners. It has loads of forgiveness and a nice turf interaction. The Wilson sand wedge I got can get the ball into the air pretty quickly and its deep face provides quality contact. I went to Arroyo Seco in Pasadena for their driving range since it is one of the most affordable driving ranges in LA. After hitting for a couple times, I took a class just to learn the techniques and correct some of the mistakes I often make.

After my first class and a couple more practice sessions, I hit my first golf course in Arroyo Seco - it’s a pretty easy 3 par golf course, suitable for beginners. Since the sand wedge can’t hit the ball too far, it was a perfect point to start. A couple beers later, I was able to finish my first course (score was not pretty, but such a good time!)

After I figured out that I like golfing, I bought a club set: I got the Top Flite Women's 2020 XL 12-Piece Complete Set from Dick’s. It’s one of the cheaper sets for beginners and has fairly good reviews. It turned out to be a good purchase: the clubs are so light, forgiving and the length is also perfect. The colored stripping in the handle grips does come off, but that it so be expected if you play and use your clubs often.

Golf has brought me so much joy since I started, and I'm so excited to learn more and make more friends on this beautiful journey! 🏌️‍♀️🏌️‍♀️
