After watching NOPE at the movie theater in Westlake (I thought NOPE was a great movie, but man, certain parts got my heart racing!), I was hungry.
Since I was craving sushi, I went to Yuzu King Japanese Cuisine, which is located in a small strip mall a few minutes away from Crocker Park.
Yuzu King is an unassuming joint, and it's small. There are only two tables in the restaurant, and the two tables take up almost half of the place. Luckily, when I went to Yuzu King, it was late afternoon, and the place wasn't busy, so I was able to snag a table.
Though Yuzu King may have a modest exterior, they serve fantastic sushi.
For my late lunch, I got one of the lunch specials - 3 maki rolls for $12.95, which I thought was a great deal. I also ordered the takoyaki appetizer.
The 3 rolls I got were tuna, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura.
And they were all delicious.
The fish in each roll was fresh. I devoured the tuna and spicy tuna rolls, but my favorite was probably the shrimp tempura, which had crispy shrimp tempura and avocado and was topped with eel sauce and red tobiko.
My takoyaki appetizer was also tasty. The fried balls were crisp on the outside and gooey on the inside with little pieces of octopus. They were topped with bonito flakes and Japanese mayonnaise, which offered additional flavor.
The maki roll lunch special also came with a side salad and a cup of miso soup. My only criticism is that the side salad wasn't much of a salad. It was quite literally just iceberg lettuce leaves. The dressing was good though, and I enjoyed my hot bowl of miso soup. Besides, who goes to a sushi place for the salad?
I washed down my meal with a can of "yuzu soda." Yuzu is a citrus fruit that my server described as a sharper grapefruit. I enjoyed the yuzu soda, and if the idea of a less sweet Sprite with more of a bite sounds appealing to you, I recommend trying it.
All in all, if you're looking for great sushi that's also inexpensive, I recommend Yuzu King.
Yuzu King is located at 27333 Detroit Rd, Westlake, OH 44145.
