I should be eating healthier.
But I was really craving a donut (or two).
The other day, since I was in Lakewood, I went to the Vegan Doughnut Company.
Hey, donuts are healthy when they're vegan, right? Just kidding. While the Vegan Doughnut Company's treats are 100% vegan, nut-free, and preservative-free, they are most definitely a calorie-laden indulgence.
But dang, are they a delicious indulgence and so worth the calories!
Getting one donut would've been bad enough, but since I was decidedly not counting my calories, I got two donuts. I got the choco taco cake donut and the strawberry shortcake donut.
Both were absolutely scrumptious.
The donuts were fresh and just as moist as non-vegan donuts. The choco taco cake donut perfectly emulated the flavor of a choco taco. Sprinkled on top of the chocolate glazed donut were little waffle cone bits, little chocolate chips, vanilla cream, and chocolate drizzle. The donut was so much better and much more moist than a non-vegan chocolate glazed donut from Dunkin'.
I loved the strawberry shortcake donut even more. On top of the perfectly fried yeast donut were strawberry icing that had real strawberry flavor and none of that artificial strawberry flavor taste, buttercream that was just as rich and delicious as the stuff with dairy, and a fresh strawberry.
The donuts were a great way to start the morning (if not quite a healthy way, haha).
The donuts were a bit on the expensive side and significantly pricier than your average non-vegan donut (about $3 per donut). But I don't mind paying a little more for vegan food, and I definitely don't mind paying a little more for food from a small business since, like us average folks, small businesses are also feeling the sting of inflation. And at $3 per donut, I still feel like I got more than my money's worth. In addition to being unbelievably yummy, my vegan donuts were filling and kept my stomach content throughout the morning.
