WINTER HAVEN, FL - A significant change is coming to the school crossing at Bomber and Rifle Range Road in the Wahneta area of Winter Haven, as officials have announced the removal of the school crossing guard stationed there. The decision comes after observations concluded that no unaccompanied school children use the crossing, which is also regulated by a traffic signal.

This decision was reached by the School Crossing Guard Committee, a body comprising representatives from various key organizations including Polk County Public Schools, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Board of County Commissioners Traffic Engineering Division, the Polk County Sheriff's Office, and several municipalities within Polk County. The committee's resolution followed detailed traffic surveys conducted at the crossing to assess its usage by school children.

The committee operates with a protocol that includes informing the principal of the affected school about any changes to crossing guard deployments. This ensures that school officials are aware and can communicate any future changes in crossing usage that might warrant a reassessment. The principal of the school served by the Bomber and Rifle Range Road crossing has been notified of the guard's removal and reminded to report any changes in pedestrian patterns among students.

Effective the end of business on Friday, April 12, 2024, the school crossing guard will no longer be present at the aforementioned location. This move is part of an ongoing review process conducted by the committee throughout the year to ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively, prioritizing the safety of school children.

Despite the removal of the crossing guard, local law enforcement emphasizes the continuous need for driver caution in school zones. Patrols by deputies and officers will persist as a daily reminder of the importance of safe driving habits in these areas. Motorists are reminded that fines for traffic violations are doubled in school zones, reflecting the community's commitment to protecting its youngest members.
