Is Rubino's italian Foods on East Ridge Road, Rochester, NY the only place that carries Hazelnuts year round? Seriously, I have been beyond obsessed with roasted hazelnuts to munch on and make my favorite sweet snacks with..

Growing up, my grandparents in Macedonia had a hazelnut tree and still do so we always them to much on. Not only were they a snack as they were, my grandmother uses them in many desserts. She puts them in cakes, filings, spreads, and so much more! She has even made hazelnut ice cream and that may just be my favorite thing that she has made. The ice cream she was was made with toasted hazelnuts, not hazelnut extract so it tasted SO GOOD and unlike any ice cream I have had before.

Long story short, hazelnuts have been something that remind me of my childhood in so many ways and I had been on the hunt for them in Rochester for a while. I have noticed that Wegmans carries them, however it has not been consistent. They seem to not have them when I wanted them so I gave up. I noticed that Rubino's carries them on accident during one of my trips there and even though it's a little farther of a drive, I enjoy going to Rubino's for other groceries so I don't mind getting my hazelnuts there. Not only that but I like that Rubino's has an option of getting the hazelnuts in a shell for a fraction of the price.

You might be wondering what I do with hazelnuts all year round. I enjoy hazelnuts a few different ways.

I like to have fruit and nuts as a snack, making a healhty homemade Nutella, and my favorite snack0 chocolate covered hazelnuts.

Althgouth hazelnuts are safe to eat raw, I always roast them as soon as I get them. Not only do they taste better roasted but they also are much easier to peel .

How to roast Hazelnuts.

1. Preheat oven to 350F.

2. Lay hazelnuts on a baking sheet in a single layer.

3. Roast for 10-15 minutes or lightly browned and fragrant.

6. Place them in a kitchen towel while still warm and let them steam for about 2-3 minutes.

7. Gently rub the hazelnuts in the towl to release the skin. At this point, they should be very easy to peel

After the hazelnuts have been peeled, one of my favorite snacks to make is chocolate covered hazelnuts.

To make chocolate covered hazelnuts you need two ingredients.

  • chocolate chips
  • hazelnuts.

Melt the chocolate and drizzle over hazelnuts. Let the chocolate set and enjoy as a sweet treat.

Another delicious treat I like to make is a healthier homemade Nutella. To make homemade Nutella using roased hazelnuts you need.

  • 2 cups of roasted hazelnuts
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup plus 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup hazelnut milk (or a milk of choice)
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp coconut oil

Add all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until you get a smooth consistancy. While this will not be as creamy as store bought Nutella, it will be smooth enough to spread with a slight crunch.

I like to add my homemade Nutella on pancakes and I also like dipping strawberries and bananas in it for a nice sweet treat that is both tasty and satisfying.

There are several benefits of eating hazelnuts. A few of the most known are:

They are a great source of fiber. A great effect of eating the daily reccommended serving of fiber helps with regular bowel movements.

They contain vitamin E, a powefrul antioxident.

Although calorie dense, I love sneaking delicious hazelnuts in my diet and I have no shame in doing so.
