One of the most notable sites in Tribeca is the David Ruggles House on 36 Lispenard Street. This unassuming building once served as a safe haven for over 600 fugitive slaves in the 1830s, thanks to the efforts of free African-American abolitionist David Ruggles. He risked his own life and liberty to shelter runaway slaves at his home, and his most famous guest was Frederick Douglass, who went on to become a significant leader in the abolitionist movement and American history.
