Fundraiser Boosts Successor to Book Revue

The owner of a book store planned for downtown Huntington as a successor to the Book Revue has launched a fundraising campaign to make her dream come true.

Mallory Braun, 28, a former manager at the Book Revue, wants to launch The Next Chapter, with books as well as space for events and local artisans.

The shutdown of the popular Book Revue after a rent dispute hit many Huntington residents hard, she said. “They experience something one way forever, and they’re sad,” Braun said of the people who come by and stare through the windows or tug at the locked doors.

People want a bookstore back, she said. “People have been reaching out and want us to move to Farmingadale or Cold Spring Harbor but we’re going to stay right here downtown.

To do that, Braun needs to find a space to rent, and to do THAT, she needs money.

So her kickstarter campaign aims to raise $250,000 and as of mid-afternoon Wednesday, she had collected $57,657. If she doesn’t reach the goal, all donations will be returned.

With Rich Klein, Book Revue owner, providing counsel, Braun is planning a shop that will initially consist largely of used and remaindered books.

Rare books, zines, ephemera, art, paper matter upcycled from damaged books, vinyl, locally-made and handmade sidelines and a selection of new books are also part of the plan.

“I always have been a reader,” she said. “Bookstores are just incredibly important places to gather, to learn new ideas and to  teach yourself interesting things instead of being reliant on what you are forced to learn in school.

“A bookstore makes a town interesting and brings foot traffic. They are like magical and comfortable places. We plan to give the community what I think is missing.

The Book Revue, which opened in the heart of downtown Huntington 44 years ago, closed Sept. 10 with the store flinging open its doors and giving away thousands of books, many used or remaindered. Over its run, the store drew hundreds of authors, celebreties such as political leaders, athletes, astronauts and business leaders, as well as entertainers from film and TV stars to dancers, singers and others, who came in to read from or sign their books. It also became a gathering place for authors' fans and aspiring writers.
