The South Huntington school district is hoping to shed some property and will ask voters on May 18 for their approval.

The teen center at 310 West Hills Road, opposite Walt Whitman High School, would be sold to attorney David Barton, who plans to move his offices from 33 Walt Whitman Road to the former school property.

School superintendent Dr. David Bennardo and Dr. Vito Delia, the incoming superintendent who will succeed Bennardo when he retires in July, said Thursday that Barton and the district  plan to work together to create a mock trial program for students.

The second site is an athletic field abutting the parking lot at 33 Walt Whitman Road and other businesses. The girls softball program, which had been using the field, will use space behind the South Huntington Public Library.

Bennardo and Delia said the field was no longer of use to the district, and that it has a contract to sell the property for $800,000 to Dena Properties, LLC, if voters approve. Dena is identified as a processing agent that just incorporated in New York State in February but there are similarly named companies in several other states.

One property the district won’t offload is a site on Chichester Road in Huntington Station. When the district first raised the possibility of selling it, many residents began lobbying for the town to buy the property and turn it into a park or playground, but the district dropped the idea recently.

The propositions are on the ballot May 18 for voters to approve or disapprove, along with elections to the Board of Education, and a decision on the proposed budget for the next school year.
