Wind gusts reaching up to 50 MPH are expected to continue to add to the frigid cold Friday in the Huntington area.

Temperatures were below 20 Friday morning, with wind-chill temperatures in the low single digits.

The National Weather Service reminded residents to dress for bitter cold, and warned that frostbite can occur in a short amount of time.

While the frigid cold is coming down from Canada, a snowstorm is making its way up the East Coast and could hit the area starting Sunday night. The coastal storm could bring 6 or more inches of snow, the service said, bringing more wind, flooding and beach erosion. The exact track of the storm is uncertain, however.

The Health and Welfare Council said that  homeless persons needing shelter  during inclement winter weather can call Suffolk County DSS’ Temporary Housing Assistance Unit at 631-854-9547. Monday through Friday, between 8am and 4:30pm. Outside of those hours, please call SCDSS Emergency Services Unit at 631-854-9100.

Experts are reminding residents to keep pets safe and out of the cold.
