This popular foodie spot sits in every guide book and is one of the most visited restaurants in Taipei. You can spot the space occupying the original Din Tai Fung immediately due to the large waiting crowds fighting to sample the famous xiao long bao or the chance of dining at the table where Tom Cruise once sat.
The Yong Kang Street institution started as a soy sauce shop decades earlier and is now a worldwide chain selling those juicy, indulgent pork buns that you can't stop eating. After years of creating their famous recipes, the restaurant is going stronger than ever, enticing locals and tourists on a daily basis.
We always order at least two steaming bamboo baskets of the xiao long bao and maybe even move onto a third. They are that good. Other favourite dishes include their addictive Shaohsing Wine Marinated Chicken, the indulgent Fried Pork Chop, the tempting Sauteed Sting Beans with Minced Pork, the Sweet and Sour Pork Spare Ribs, the Spicy Beef Tripe, the Crispy Shrimp Pancake, the Cold Dressed Chayote Shoots, the Braised Eggplants, the Stewed Bamboo Shoots and the Shanghai Style Soy Sprouts.
On colder days don't miss out on their warming Chicken Noodle Soup and they make one of my favourite Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soups in the city.
Don’t be put off by the long wait. Take a number and shop around the busy Yong Kang Street while you wait your turn. A must eat for us during every Taipei visit.
