Man detained after power was knocked out by vehicle crashing into a utility pole during major accident in north Houston

Several vehicles were involved in an accident in the 4800 block of East Mount Houston, near the Eastex freeway that occurred around 10 p.m. on September 2, 2022. At least one of these hit a utility pole at some point during the accident causing severe damage to one of the vehicles, a dark-colored Chevrolet Tahoe that was involved.

There was a complete closure of East Mount Houston as the powerlines stretched across the street, despite vehicles being out of the roadway. A shopping center was quickly utilized by passing motorists as a bypass.

One man also appeared to be detained by police after the accident that took place in front of Manny’s Mexican Grill & Seafood restaurant in north Houston. It is not clear why he was detained or which vehicle he was in nor his involvement in the accident.

Surprisingly, there did not seem to be any major injuries as tow truck operators worked quickly to remove the vehicles away from the downed power lines.

Centerpoint crews who were working on a project down the street witnessed the accident and saw bright flashes of light. They quickly headed down to the accident scene and started working on making the scene safe for first responders as well as starting on the repairs.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into how the accident was caused and who may be responsible. If you have any information about the accident, you are urged to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office at (713) 221-6000.
