A suspect was shot after leading police on a chase from Hitchcock, Texas in Galveston County to the 500 Block of N Shepherd in Houston. The chase started just after 1 a.m. and ended just before 2 a.m. on August 7, 2022. The suspect was shot after hitting an approaching officer with his vehicle.

According to Chief Wilmon Smith of the Hitchcock Police Department, a police officer in Hitchcock, attempted to make a traffic stop at about 1:15 a.m. The suspect, a man, did not stop and fled from the officer. He made his way to I-45 and headed northbound towards Houston at a high rate of speed.

Eventually, Chief Smith stated, a police unit was able to get in front of the suspect's vehicle and was able to stop the vehicle. The suspect then decided to take off and hit one of the approaching officers with his vehicle. That officer, according to Chief Smith discharged his weapon, and the suspect's vehicle stopped a few hundred feet away.

The suspect appeared to be shot in the arm and was driving a 2022 Dodge Challenger. At one point he could be heard saying he wanted to go to church and was calling out for Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church in Houston. Paramedics treated him on the scene.

Both the suspect and the officer were transported to the hospital and are said to be in stable condition.

The Houston Police Department and the Harris County District Attorney's Office will be conducting an investigation since this is an officer-involved shooting. All other agencies involved will be assisting in the investigation according to Chief Smith.
