Civil War Burial Trench Located by Radar
The History Seekers team was requested to assist in the location of a lost burial of Civil War soldiers. Near one of the many make shift hospitals approximately 36 soldiers from both sides were buried here following the battle with markers originally placed by local civilians. In the 1930s a farmer purchased the land from the original owner and removed all the markers in order to plant crops over the mass graves. Over time the location was lost and only a general idea of the burial was in a 5 acre field remained. The History Seekers team along with others were able to confirm the exact location of these men from war by using ground penetrating radar. In some cases allowing them to see where soldiers were buried shoulder to shoulder. The project continues and will result in markers being placed to honor those men.
