New rumours are circulating about products that Apple might launch this year. Among them, there would be a "product" for augmented reality, AirTag beacons (which allow locating lost objects), as well as computers or tablets using mini-LED screens.
Rumours have been circulating for quite some time about Apple's development of augmented reality goggles or headsets. And while the Cupertino firm has not confirmed any of these rumours for the moment, Tim Cook has never hidden his interest in this technology, which he considers to be one of the most important.
On the other hand, Apple already offers a tool for the iPhone and iPad that allows developers to create augmented reality apps. And in 2020, Apple has equipped its new iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro with a LiDAR scanner. In essence, this scanner makes a 3D scan of the user's environment and allows augmented reality apps to be more accurate.
What about the first "augmented reality product" in 2021?
For the moment, we don't know when Apple might launch its first augmented reality goggles (the famous "Apple Glass"?) or its first headset. But an article recently published by our MacRumours colleagues suggests that Apple's first product dedicated to augmented reality could be introduced this year.
The article relays a note that would have been published by the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. And it is this note which would evoke the possible launch, this year, of an "unspecified augmented reality device".
Unfortunately, there is not much detail. In fact, MacRumours does not exclude the possibility that this "unspecified" device is actually another iPad with a LiDAR scanner optimized for augmented reality applications.
On the other hand, for the time being, all this information is not official. So caution is called for.
In any case, it should be noted that many companies are already marketing augmented reality glasses, including Microsoft (with the Hololend) and Google (with the Google Glass). But for the moment, AR glasses interest more companies than consumers.
And on its side, Facebook has already announced that it is developing augmented reality glasses. As Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg is very interested in this type of product.
Apple should also, finally, launch the AirTag
The MacRumours article mentions other products that Apple could launch this year, including the AirTag. This product has been mentioned in the media since 2019 but has not yet been launched.
Essentially, these would be object locator beacons similar to Tile products, which would work using Bluetooth technology. The AirTag was expected to be launched in 2020. But finally, this product is expected to be released this year.
Any news about tablets and computers?
Otherwise, Apple should also launch new computers using new Apple Silicon processors, improved versions of the M1 chip used by the Mac mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro launched in 2020.
Finally, 2021 could also be marked by the launch of the first Apple products with displays using mini-LED technology, which will offer a better experience than LCDs. Apple could use mini-LEDs on new Macs, but also new iPad tablets.
