Pixar's latest creation, Soul, is available exclusively on Disney+ on December 25th. An ideal Christmas gift for the whole family.
Soul is the latest film from the imagination of Pete Docter, creator of Vice Versa. In this animated film, we can follow Joe Gardner's adventures (dubbed by Jamie Foxx), a New York music teacher. As he is about to sign the contract he has been waiting for all his life, a twist of fate brings him to the "Big Before", a sort of antechamber in which new souls are given their personalities before going to Earth. The only solution to continue his adventure is to help "22", a soul desperately searching for its personality.
In times of pandemic, Disney had to revise its plans. A few months ago, the giant announced the release of its new animated film on the Disney+ platform. So it is this December 25th that Soul arrives on the platform.
This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a film that is already widely acclaimed by critics and considered by some as the best Pixar for years. If you enjoyed Vice Versa, Soul should give you and your family a great time.
Rarely has the Big Apple been so well represented in an animated film where the two filmmakers show the city in all its diversity. A real joy for lovers of the City that never sleeps but this musical poem about a musician who is not feeling well in his skin and is looking for a meaning to his life.
Jazz and images go hand in hand
"Animated cinema has been a good match for jazz since its beginnings. This rhythmic music was then ideal to set images. We've carried on this tradition," says Docter, citing Betty Boop's short films from the 1930s and Disney's The Book of the Jungle (1967). And even if it's a cliché, whoever says "jazz" often thinks "black". Peter Docter and Kemp Powers immediately decided that their hero would be African-American.
As much for its form as for its content, Soul is a great animated film that knows how to make you think and entertain.
