The Famous Hemingway Family: A Look Back

Herbie J Pilato

The famous Hemingway family has had their share of life and career trials and tribulations.

A Closer Look

Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. His economical and understated style—which included his iceberg theory—had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and the public image brought him admiration from later generations. He died by suicide [via a gunshot) in 1961.

Ernest Miller's granddaughter, Margaux Louise Hemingway, was an American fashion model and actress. She gained success as a supermodel in the mid-1970s, appearing on the covers of magazines including Cosmopolitan, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and Time. She died by suicide (via a drug overdose) in 1996.

Ernest Miller's other famous granddaughter, Mariel Hadley Hemingway, is an American actress. She began acting at age 14 with a Golden Globe-nominated breakout role in Lipstick, and she received Academy and BAFTA Award nominations for her performance in Woody Allen's Manhattan.

In a documentary from 2013, Mariel said her late father, Jack, son of Ernest, sexually abused her two older sisters, Margaux, and the eldest sibling, an artist who leads a private life in Idaho.

As with certain members of the Hemingway family, life in the spotlight, whether by way of the literary, acting, or modeling venues, proved to be a challenge.

Meanwhile, too, it remains so many who choose to pursue careers in the entertainment industry, in general.
