Introduction
Many have considered Connie Converse the first contemporary vocalist-composer, writing and playing poignant tunes on her acoustic guitar in the mid-1950s. She was a virtual unknown in every sense of the term. But now, in her absence over the decades, some have defined her work as significant and monumental.
What Happened? No One Really Knows.
In August of 1974, mere days after her 50th birthday, Connie Converse mailed sweet correspondence to various dear family members and friends expressing that she was seeking a new beginning. Displeased with the way her life was headed, Converse packed her belongings into her tiny Volkswagen Beetle. She then drove away from her Michigan home and never heard from again.
A Closer Look
Elizabeth Eaton Converse was born on August 3, 1924, in Laconia, New Hampshire to a minister and his wife, whose home was rigidly Baptist. She had two siblings: Paul, who was three years older, and Philip, who was four years her junior.
According to the BBC, Philip, who later became a political scientist, recalled his sister in her youth as a “genius” and a “polymath.” And he did "...not use the terms lightly.” As he would later tell The New Yorker, “Our parents were devastated,” upon losing Connie.
Non-Conclusion
While in the New York of the past, Connie Converse had dedicated her time to writing poetry, drawing, painting, and learning the guitar. She began publishing essays with The Far Eastern Survey and was employed at a printing house in the Flatiron district. She had an apartment in Greenwich Village, where she composed her music and played it for friends.
Those compositions are all that remain of her mind, heart, and soul, and they will forever be her truest legacy. That is unless any missing pieces of her mysterious life are ever found and combined to solve the remarkable puzzle she left behind.
