While the Grammys may have snubbed The Weeknd, the Billboard Muisc Awards celebrated the "Starboy" singer in a big way. The Canadian artist was nominated for 16 awards and took home the most trophies of the night with ten – including Top Artist and Top Hot 100 Artist – bringing his career total to 19. With this, he becomes the number five most decorated Billboard Musis Award winner of all time behind Drake, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Garth Brooks.
“I'd like to thank my fellow nominees. It's been a dark year and you brought light and an escape with your music," The Weeknd said onstage collecting his first award of the night.
The Weeknd famously called out the Grammys for thier secretive committee process that likely played a role in his shockingly zero nominations for the 2021 awards after having one of the biggest albums and the most-streamed single of the year with “After Hours” and “Blinding Light.” Although the very public controversial fallout resulted in changes in the voting process at the Recording at the Academy, the chart-topping singer will continue to boycott the Grammys.
The Billboard Music Awards featured a star-studded lineup of presenters including Leslie Odom Jr., Gabrielle Union, Chelsea Handler, Cynthia Erivo, Dixie D’Amelio, Lena Waithe, and The Weeknd who appeared in a red convertible from an undisclosed location in downtown Los Angeles and performed a beautiful rendition of his hit "Save Your Tears."
