Meet the Stylists to the Stars…of Damascus
The Stylists at Hair RazorsJulina Salazar/Used with permission
Nestled unassumingly between a gym and an Indian market is a hidden gem within the Damascus community in Montgomery County. Don't be fooled by the outside, the inside is cozy, friendly, and welcoming. Inside you will be greeted with a friendly smile and a stylish motif with crystal chandeliers, a plush waiting area, and the most comfortable salon chairs.
Come to where everyone knows your name
Behind the magic is owner Julina Salazar and the stylists at Hair Razors. Do you remember that television show where everyone knows your name? That is Hair Razors; a welcoming community of friends and hair experts, or as Julina likes to say, “Hair Scientists” as she concocts gorgeous colors for her clients.
Julina’s sunny disposition, bubbly laughter, and skill with a pair of scissors and hair color make her a beloved member of the community. Julina lovingly supports and gives back to the community that embraced her when she arrived from Utah in 2008.
Not only is Julina a hair expert, she is an active member of her community supporting it through the sponsorship of local sporting groups (such as the Varsity football at Damascus High School and the Damascus Dolphins swim team), the Lions Club, ongoing food drives for the Little Free Pantry in Damascus, the donation of hair to a local private kid wig donation center in Maryland, collecting shoes and clothes for Honduras, and a 15% discount for law enforcement.
Kindness and love woven throughout the salon
When you walk into Hair Razors, you are not just a client; you are family. With a gift for hiring the right people, Julina’s hiring practices are a little atypical. Instead of focusing on money and hair skills, Julina employs people based on their kindness to others. Her daughter, Rio, is the inspiration behind her hiring practices. Rio is autistic, and Julina hires her employees based on how kind they are to others and how they treat Rio.
“Life with a person with autism is awesome. She doesn’t hold us back, she moves us forward. I want people to see the fun and adventures she can have.”—Julina Salazar, Owner of Hair Razors
According to Julina, hair skills can be taught, learned, and evolve over time. But kindness, tolerance, and love are the building blocks for her business. The stylists bring their cultural diversity, extensive salon experience, and their passion to working together to provide the best service for their clients.
With her daughter, Rio, in mind, Julina decided to buy Hair Razors when the previous owner, Dianne Eilers, decided to sell the salon in 2017. Hair Razors, a long-standing pillar in the community and once known as Darlon Hair Design, was owned and operated by Eilers’ mother, Barbara Burdette. Julina wanted a place for her child to work, be loved, and be safe which prompted her decision to buy the salon. Julina said that buying Hair Razors was the best thing she had ever done because everyone in the salon treats each other like family.
“If the love is there, good hair comes.”—Julina Salazar, Owner of Hair Razors
Check out their services
All of the stylists are skilled in cuts, colors, and perms. In addition to these services, the salon also provides keratin treatments, waxing, microblading, spray tanning, lash extensions, and updos for prom, homecoming, and wedding parties. There is also a full-service nail technician who offers manicures and spa pedicures.
“The foundation to great hair is the relationship,”—Julina Salazar, Owner of Hair Razors
The salon's philosophy is that if you take the time to know and care about your clients, you will make them look good. Julina loves seeing all of the clients' compliments when Hair Razors posts the before and after pictures on social media. You can find Hair Razors on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
The stylists have more than 250 years of experience among them. Julina trained at the Salt Lake City Cosmetology and Color USA in Chicago, Illinois where she learned all things color such as experimenting with vivid color and color intensifiers.
Whether you call for an appointment or a walk-in, the receptionist is the first person you will meet at Hair Razors. With a friendly smile, she will fit you with the right stylist. If you are wondering about prices, Hair Razors remains one of the most affordable salons in Montgomery County, with people coming as far away as Virginia for their appointments.
“I have to make money to pay my bills, but that’s not my bottom line. My bottom line is kindness.” —Julina Salazar, Owner of Hair Razors
The people behind the chairs are more than stylists. They are cheerleaders, confidants, sounding boards, and most importantly, friends.
Kindness and love bring extraordinary results
Julina’s hiring process may be out of the ordinary, but it brings extraordinary results. Hair Razors retained its clientele throughout the pandemic, with continued high repeat clientele. Every referral is through recommendations from happy clients.
When I asked Julina to describe her salon she said, "In a word, Hair Razors is love." Love, kindness, and building relationships is woven throughout every aspect of Hair Razors.
If you want to treat yourself or someone special in your life, do yourself a favor and make an appointment at Hair Razors. You will love yourself for it. What better way to support Women’s History Month than supporting a woman-owned small business in your community? Do it!
