ABILENE- Thursday, February 23, 2023, Hardin-Simmons University will participate in the Polar Plunge to support local Special Olympic Texas Athletes.

Special Olympics Texas invites you to take part in Dunk the President!

Cast your dollars as votes today! University presidents from Hardin-Simmons, Abilene Christian, and McMurry have all volunteered to take the jump in the cold water. The president with the most money to their name has to take the Plunge! All money raised will go toward providing year-round sports training and competition, health, and inclusion programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the Big Country.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance to honor the sacrifice made by the men and women who have died during their service in the United States military. Hardin-Simmons University is a community steeped in service. Across campus, you will find memorials dedicated to students, faculty, and staff who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice during military service. Hardin-Simmons Graduates Admitted to Top Choice Graduate Programs

Graduate School for speech-language pathology (SLP) is highly competitive, and this year, six of the seven graduating seniors from Hardin-Simmons University in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) who plan to attend graduate school were accepted into their top choice school. The student who did not apply to graduate school works as a speech-language pathology assistant. Dr. Becky Saterbak, the department head of the Communication Sciences and Disorders department, said this has never happened since her time at HSU.

Irvin School of Education Earns Accreditation and Commendations

Earlier this year, as a result of continuous positive and productive instruction and effective assessments, the Irvin School of Education at Hardin-Simmons University received an accredited status according to the 2021-2022 Accountability System for Educator Preparation Accreditation Statuses (ASEP). In addition to the Accredited status, HSU Irvin SOE received two commendations.

Student Tutors Featured on National Platform

Hardin-Simmons University's Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) was recently featured on Engeneerica. This program is used to take attendance and keep the data of how ACE is used, the number of students who use this program, determine the number of ACEs that should be employed, and more. Dr. Carol Krueger, Director of Undergraduate Advising and Disability Services at HSU, shared, "Engineerica gives us good data to support our academic support programs." As a result of being featured in this program, Hardin-Simmons University is now recognized nationally. This means that the ACE program at HSU is recognized nationally too.

Hardin-Simmons Donates 150 Beds to Those in Need

On March 8, 2023, a semi-truck from Texas Baptist Men (TBM) pulled up to the campus of Hardin-Simmons University. TBM did not come to Abilene for disaster relief, as they are famously known for, but to receive a donation of 150 mattresses from the university. When HSU noticed an abundance of mattresses in storage, Eric Bruntmyer, President of HSU, said he “reached out to the BGCT for help, and they directed me to TBM.”

Hardin-Simmons Hosts 24-Hour Prayer Event

From 8:00 p.m. on March 29 to 8:00 p.m. on March 30, a small tent on Anderson lawn stood as the primary location for Hardin-Simmons University students, staff, and faculty to pray for the campus, Abilene, and the world. The Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) organized the 24-hour prayer event called ANDY 24, which was preceded by a time of worship and a short message.

The 2023 Altom Christian Service Award

The 2023 Altom Christian Service Award recipient is HSU senior Madison Lewis. Originally from Marble Falls, Texas, Madison is a graduate of Goldthwaite High School and is the daughter of Rev. Greg and Jill Lewis. Her father is the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Goldthwaite, and her mother is a third-grade math teacher. During her high school years, Madison competed in UIL news writing and worked part-time for the local newspaper, The Goldthwaite Eagle.

Hardin-Simmons Dance Team Competes at Nationals

The nationally-ranked Spurs Dance Team is a pom squad that performs at all Hardin-Simmons University football and basketball games and is a vital part of HSU life. In addition to the performance pom squad, the team performs in various events and avenues, allowing them to showcase their varied types of dance talents; jazz, tap, hip hop, and contemporary. The Spurs perform at over 50 events and athletic games each year on campus. They also perform in HSU’s All-School SING, a campus-wide talent show.

HSU Hosts Women’s History Month Event

March is Women’s History Month, and for the past six years, Hardin-Simmons University has hosted numerous events organized by students, faculty, and staff to celebrate women and their achievements. On March 28, a panel conversation about this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “embracing equity,” took place in the Johnson Building and was accompanied by catering from Aramark, a feminine hygiene drive, and door prizes.
