The NHS has made a decision to provide the drug olaparib to around 800 cancer patients on the basis of clinical trials showing it can significantly improve their chances of survival. Olaparib is a targeted treatment designed to combat specific cancers related to defective versions of the BRCA genes. The drug is already available to women with advanced ovarian cancer and in Scotland has been accessible since 2021 to some men with inherited advanced prostate cancer. This latest decision means around 500 men with advanced prostate cancer and 300 women with HER2-negative early breast cancer who are at high risk of the disease returning will be able to access olaparib free on the NHS immediately.
