Certain restaurant chains catch fire, spread rapidly throughout the country, and then, little by little, begin to fade away into the distance as if the chain never existed. You can probably think of a few off the top of your head. When was the last time you saw a Ponderosa? Even classic chains like Chili’s and Applebees are starting to fluctuate. Well, one restaurant in greater Phoenix suffered from massive shutdowns and budget slashes and ended up on the cutting room floor. However, the restaurant has returned to the Valley and is hoping to capitalize on a new direction for the brand.

If you have lived in the area for a while, chances are you have seen Kona Grill. The very first restaurant opened in Scottsdale back in 1998. The owner of the space had originally dabbled in sushi, but sushi hadn’t fully taken control of the United States at the time, even so, the original sushi restaurant lasted for four years before the switch to an American-grill-themed restaurant.

After seven years, Kona Grill eventually went public and it began spreading across the country. Within nine years, Kona Grill existed in 17 states, and two years later, it went international, expanding throughout North America into Canada and Mexico, and eventually to Dubai and UAE.

However, as was the case for many brands at the time, Kona Grill might have surged a bit too quickly, and in 2019, the brand filed for bankruptcy protection. The Kona Grill restaurants in numerous states, including right here in Arizona, closed up shop. Nearly all of the other restaurants were sold off. However, after some restructuring and retooling, Kona Grill is back in metro Phoenix. In fact, there are now three locations up and running, the newest being at Desert Ridge in Phoenix. Located at 21001 North Tatum Blvd, the restaurant is officially open and now serving (you can also visit the other two locations at the Fashion Square Mall in Scottsdale and 2224 East Williams Field Road in Gilbert).

If you plan on stopping by, the restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 11 AM until 12 AM, Friday and Saturday from 11 AM until 1 AM, and on Sunday from 11 AM until 11 PM. There are even two happy hour periods. Monday through Friday the first happy hour runs from 2 PM until 6 PM. The second happy hour is all week and runs from 9 PM until close.
