The Mercardo District has long been a unique, eclectic, and fun side of Tucson, tucked away and yet close to it all. It’s one of those locations visitors to the city rarely see, which helps focus all the attention on locals. There’s a charm to the central courtyard, as the majority of shops and restaurants open up to it, with patrons pooling out as they listen to music while sipping coffee or enjoying a cocktail with dinner. Coming this fall, there will be a new addition to the ever-evolving district, as guests will be able to not only enjoy pizza with everything else Mercado District has to offer but pizza by the slice.
Not long ago, Falora opened up at 3000 East Broadway (just off the Country Club intersection). It has been serving customers thing-crust pizza, prepared inside the custom wood-fired oven. Combined with locally sourced vegetables and regional beers, the neighborhood quickly wrapped its arms around the pizza joint. Now, the owners of Falora are bringing a new pizza restaurant to the Mercardo District.
The new restaurant will feature New York-style pizza, rather than the Napoli variation of pizza served at Falora. In honor of the classic New York City pizza houses that serve up their large pies by the slice, the new restaurant will be called Whole Slice Pizza.
Whole Slice Pizza has not yet officially been announced by Mercardo District, but as the restaurant is set to open sometime in the fall, there is still time for an official press release from the district. Because some of the details are still forthcoming, there is no information yet as to whether Whole Slice Pizza will be located inside the main Mercado San Agustin area of the district, or if it will be situated in the annex.
If you haven’t been to the Mercardo District in some time, there are a number of restaurants that are up and running throughout the area. In the Mercado San Agustin area you will find Agustin Kitchen, Dolce Pastello Cakes, La Estrella Bakery, Presta Coffee Roasters, and Seis Kitchen. In the annex, you can stop by and visit Beaut Burger, Kukai Fresh Japanese Kitchen, Westbound, and Decibel Coffee Works.
In fact, if you’re looking for something this evening (June 2), as well as tomorrow, Saturday, June 3, the annex portion of the district is celebrating its five-year anniversary, where you will find food, drink, and retail specials, plus live music.
