One particular California burger chain often goes under the radar when thinking of satisfying burgers and fries. And yet, this chain, which was recently recognized by Newsweek as one of America’s Favorite Restaurant Chains (2023), has slowly expanded over the years. Now, the restaurant is adding a new location in the Valley, as it looks to continue servicing residents with an assortment of charburgers.
Back in 1969, The Habit Burger Grill first opened shop in Santa Barbara, California. Now, Santa Barbara isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind when thinking of burger destinations. The coastal California city is just up the PCH from Los Angeles, and yet it can feel a world away. It is basically where all the big-time celebrities go when they want to get away from LA without having to travel far (and still remain close to the beach).
The restaurant first started as a family-owned business but was eventually sold in 1980. A second location didn’t open for another 16 years. About a decade later, in 2007, an equity firm bought out the small burger chain. However, the original location in Santa Barbara was not included in that sale, so if you do ever find yourself in California, you can always check out the non-franchise locations. Once the equity firm took over the branding though, it quickly expanded outward. Within a decade, the restaurant had well over 100 locations in the United States and even 30 in the UK.
When COVID hit, most restaurant businesses shut down. However, Yum!, the management company that owns KFC and Taco Bell, went on to purchase The Habit Burger Grill, and from there has continued to expand. This expansion now includes the first location in Surprise. While the number of locations around metro Phoenix does continue to climb, the new addition will make it far easier for residents in Surprise to be able to grab a charburger without leaving town.
The burger menu at The Habit Burger Grill is straight and to the point. There is the Original Charburger, the Double Charburger, the Santa Barbara Char (which is going to give you a tasted bread bun as well as avocado), plus a Portabella Charburger and BBQ Bacon Charburger with Cheese.
The new location can be found at 16553 West Waddel Road. It is open seven days a week, from 10:30 AM until 10:00 PM. This is by far the furthest location to open thus far around greater Phoenix.
